Exploit[edit]

  • I think I have found a way of easily leveling combat skills using Paathurnax. I have finished the main quest line and was planning on killing Paathurnax later, when I wasn't busy with other quests. Well, I found a Daedric bow, so I figured it was time to give it a shot, so I can interact with the Blades again. When I went to the Throat of the World, I used the Daedric bow with Daedric arrows and got several sneak attacks on him, each with 3x damage (just so you understand how much damage I was doing). His health dropped down all the way, but immediately recharged. Confused, I tried using Dragon Rend and Dragonbane, despite my One-Handed skill being so low. I kept swinging and after about thrity seconds, my One-Handed skill increased. The wierdest part was that he didn't become hostile, like I expected he would. To test out the leveling theory, I re-equipped my Daedric bow, but with Iron Arrows this time (I had several hundred of them). Without fully drawing the bow, I kept firing arrows rather quickly at him. After about a minute, my Archery skill increased to 96. I repeated this until I got it to 100.
  • The point I'm trying to make is that quite a few skills could benefit from this (if it's not just a glitch with my game). Destruction, for example, can only be increased when used on a valid target. Although I haven't tested it with Destruction spells, I imagine it would work in much the same way as with my One-Handed and Archery skills. Also, unlike Oblivion, Sneak does not require that you be moving, only that you're within a certain distance. It's just a guess, but I would assume that sitting next to or behind the Word Wall that Paarthurnax is perched on would increase Sneak. Sneak attacks could increased this even further, since they make Sneak increase at a much faster rate than just sitting there or walking around. When I first tried to kill him, I used several sneak attacks in a row without him noticing. Perhaps this could be exploited with a One-Handed or Two-Handed weapon as well, increasing two skills at once.
  • I felt the need to say all of this because this is the first exploit I've heard of for Skyrim that really has no down-side (since Paarthurnax won't even count it as an assault). It could really help level up those combat skills that you never use, potentially making Lv. 50 (for the achievement or trophy) and Lv.81 (for the level cap) much, much easier to achieve.
  • That being said, I don't use exploits regularly. It ruins the fun of the game.
  • Can someone confirm/deny this as a bug or whatever it would be considered? I put it on the discussion page because I'm not quite sure where to put it or even HOW to put it there.

It's not a bug, when the main quest ends Paarthurnax is considered essential and so you can't kill him. Gideon Dragontongue 14:19, 30 November 2011 (UTC)
^ No he isn't. I killed him long after completing the main quest was complete (Xbox 360).--62.30.162.142 21:50, 8 December 2011 (UTC)
He's probably essential for a few days afterwards. I got the quest to kill Paarthurnax immediately after completing the Main Quest, but for the next few in-game weeks he was essential. I did a load more quests, came back later and murdered him successfully. Tentacle 23:42, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

Eternal Spirit[edit]

On PC version, first patch, (not bugged second patch) it seems that Word mediation perk Eternal Spirit, while it says it was added, was not. Anybody else getting this? --DaedalusMachina 10:41, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

I also had this problem... Received message saying that I had the perk, but there was no indication that I actually received anything at all. — Unsigned comment by 75.21.78.213 (talk) at 09:11 on 12 December 2011 (GMT)
Yup. Happened to me as well. Never even got to see what it actually does... --Lovless510 07:31, 17 December 2011 (UTC)
The effect is only visible on the Active Effects menu when Become Ethereal is running. Mujokan 19:02, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

360 Glitch[edit]

i just defeated alduin and went to talk to the blades girl she said kill him im trying but he isnt dying im lvl 43 i got my 1hd and 2hd weapons maxed out on him destruction does work on him also to gain skill in it as well as sneak and archery like you said. — Unsigned comment by 173.187.198.217 (talk) at 19:23 on 10 December 2011 (GMT)

That is because he may become essential after the main quest, you have to kill him before the MQ is over.RIM 19:25, 10 December 2011 (UTC)
A user on this page has noted that he may be marked essential for a few game weeks. Try going back later. It may also be because the quest "Paartuhnax" disappears after the main quest is completed. Rhoan 17:27, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
i just kept attacking him but i let his health regenerate all the way and started attacking him again and he flew away came back and died. — Unsigned comment by 174.20.221.10 (talk) at 05:06 on 30 January 2012 (GMT)

I'm at the point where I'm supposed to trap Odahving and Paarthurnax is very much invulnerable. So I haven't completed the MQ yet. Are you saying I should complete the MQ and he should be vulnerable a little bit after? 173.73.159.61 20:57, 26 December 2012 (GMT)

moved from article[edit]

**NOTE** if you want to make Blades think you killed Paarthunax (although you haven't} you can type this in your pc console setstage mqpaarthurnax 100 (yes this is considered a cheat) — Unsigned comment by 71.82.153.254 (talk) at 08:43 on 26 February 2012

I just moved the above note from the article since adding console commands isn't usually done on regular pages unless they are workarounds for bugs. Alphabetface 09:00, 28 February 2012 (UTC)
thank god you found this i didnt want to kill Paarthurnax but i wanted the greybeards and the Blades to like me thanks again 101.161.169.254

Moved to Riverwood[edit]

I hae completed the quest to kill him and then later i went to riverwood and his corpse was there in the city. The town then was attacked by a dragon. can anyone explain? — Unsigned comment by 76.104.104.11 (talk) at 23:01 on 9 August 2012

this hapened to me at winterhold as well — Unsigned comment by 76.104.104.11 (talk) at 01:13 on 30 August 2012
There is a known bug for all dragons in which its corpse will occasionally teleport to the player's fast travel destination if fast travel is intiated in the dragon's vicinity. It is not related to Paarthurnax, but all dragons. --- Kill Nazeem (talk) 23:06, 7 September 2013 (GMT) Kill Nazeem

Bend Will Paarthurnax[edit]

Does anyone know what console commands to use on him to make him a possible candidate for the Bend Will shout? — Unsigned comment by Tamriel&Sovngarde (talkcontribs) at 19:54 on 28 May 2013

I'm not sure any console commands would. You might have to edit him using the CS. Jeancey (talk) 19:58, 28 May 2013 (GMT)
There is a faction called ImmuneToBendWillFaction so maybe removing him from that faction makes him a possible candidate for Bend Will? I am looking to use console commands on PC to make him rideable with the Bend Will shout then transfer the save to my Xbox 360. Then I can ride him during the battle with Alduin on the Throat Of The World. — Unsigned comment by Tamriel&Sovngarde (talkcontribs) at 08:17 on 29 May 2013‎

Words of Power[edit]

Is it possible to meditate on the words of power without actually knowing the word? It's not required to learn the first word of Become Ethereal, unlike Unrelenting Force and Fire Breath. 86.162.123.15 23:26, 24 August 2013 (GMT)

Stub[edit]

What can we do to change this article from a stub? I want to help, but I can't see any missing information that I could add. So, what needs to be done? --- Kill Nazeem (talk) 18:28, 8 September 2013 (GMT) Kill Nazeem

He has tonnes of lines of dialogue still to be added. You can find the list here. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 18:34, 8 September 2013 (GMT)
Great, thanks. I'll take a look and see if I can't un-stub this page. --- Kill Nazeem (talk) 21:42, 8 September 2013 (GMT) Kill Nazeem

Different dialogue option[edit]

During this conversation:

Paarthurnax: "Krosis. No. I know little of what has passed below in the long years I have lived here. You are likely better informed than I."
Player: "Hmm. Esbern or Arngeir might have some idea."
Paarthurnax: "Trust your instincts, Dovahkiin. Your blood will show you the way."

When I did this, I was already Arch-Mage of Winterhold, and instead of suggesting Esbern or Arngeir, I was given an option to suggest that someone in Winterhold might know. I would add this information to the article myself, but I don't remember if it mentioned Urag gro-Shub by name, or by job title, or if it even mentioned a specific person at all. Furthermore, this is my first time through the game, so lack of experience means I can't say whether you have to be Arch-Mage, or if simply being a member of the college is good enough. I'm on PS3, so I can't use console commands to change things and check. 68.231.137.169 01:27, 9 August 2015 (UTC)

In order to test this, I completed First Lessons, then started The Throat of the World, saved, and had the conversation with Paarthurnax; the alternative line did not appear, only the "Esbern or Arngeir" one. Then I reloaded, talked to Urag at the College (about nothing in particular), and went back to Paarthurnax to have the conversation again; this time, I had the option you described, which refers to Urag as the "Lorekeeper" of the College. So, it appears that having opened dialogue with Urag at least one time is what triggers this line. (I didn't test what happens if you enter the College through the Midden, but it's not that relevant, either.) Adding this to the article.
For the record, I use the Unofficial Patch, but I don't think it affects this. --185.39.64.137 17:57, 15 June 2017 (UTC)
The line of dialogue you added does not appear in the cs for the original version of the game, neither does it appear that the USKP or USSEP touched this area at all. The only use of "Lorekeeper" in the data is multiple editor ids of dialogue used by Urag during Discerning the Mundane, but never spoken. However there are multiple accounts of its use when searching the internet, and of course our own page references the additional dialogue though not its wording. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 18:45, 15 June 2017 (UTC)
I found it in the game files here. The condition on the line is indeed as 185.* suggests: you must have spoken with Urag at least once. As long as you've done that, the line should trigger. Robin Hood  (talk) 19:31, 15 June 2017 (UTC)
There is quite a bit of dialogue and other data that appear in the CS (in red italics), but cannot be searched for, apparently because their format is unclear (UESPWiki:CSList#Bad Data). For example, the description of Valdr's Lucky Dagger [1], and some of the dialogue in Season Unending. --185.39.64.136 18:17, 17 June 2017 (UTC)

Words of power (meditation) lategame[edit]

The only meditation that has meaningful impact lategame is "Force Without Effort". Stagger more and be staggered less is good and there is no other way of getting that effect in the game. The 'Eternal Life' numbers are just too low and Firebreath is a weak shout (at least in Master/Legendary Dificulty)
