Jirolin Doran

Jirolin Doran is an Imperial commoner living in Chorrol with his wife, Ariela. He was once meant to play a role in unfinished quest, involving him believing himself (and, in fact, all humanoids) to be related to ogres and wanting to make first contact between the two races. However, this quest never made it into the game, and in the final game, both Jirolin and his wife are now just inconsequential NPCs, without any unique dialogue. As a result (see bugs), Jirolin lives a very uneventful life, standing around inside his house all day and never even eating or sleeping.

He wears a coarse linen shirt, laced leather pants along with a pair of rough leather shoes. He also carries his key with a small amount of gold.

Unused Quest-Related Dialogue[edit]

Jirolin was originally meant to give you a quest that didn't make it into the final game. While the quest itself remained, its name was either never entered or removed entirely. Similarly, all of Jirolin's voiced dialogue remains in the files, but the related subtitles did not. As such, all written text was made from scratch and might not appear exactly as Bethesda had it written down. Only some topic names remained in the files, these were used as-is.

Before meeting Jirolin, you could've heard rumors about his strange obsession from female Nords/Orcs in town (possibly only Emfrid):

"Ariela Doran really needs to do something about her husband. The man's lost his mind. Thinks he's part Ogre."
"I heard Doran again today going on about his 'Ogre relatives'. Poor guy. I think he's gone off the deep end."

When you entered his house, Jirolin would not be happy to see you, but he would quickly change his tune:

"You don't just barge into people's homes you know! Wait... You're not here about the Ogres are you? If so, word about my work must be spreading."

You could then ask him about town:

Chorrol
"Chorrol? I'm not interested in local gossip. I just want to prove to the world that ogres are people. Just like you and me."

Or about his true passion:

Ogres
"Why? You're not interested in Ogres too are you? I find them simply fascinating! Most people dismiss them as monsters, but I think that's too rash. Did you know that Ogres are actually very closely related the the enlightened races? I don't have the source on me, but I assure you, it's true. In fact, I think we find we have a lot in common with Ogres. If only someone were to take the first step in communicating with them. Since I've done quite a lot of research, it only makes sense that I would be the one to take that step. But I don't think my wife would understand. What do you think? Should I take the chance and try to make contact? Or should I resign myself to being a silent observer?"
Yes, go for it.
"I knew you'd agree, but I can't do this alone, so I'll need your help. From everything I've learned, Spy Rock seems to be the best place to start. I need you to drop some things off there, as a peace offering to the Ogres. I understand they like shiny things, so I brought these. Spy Rock is an old Imperial watch. It's no longer used, but I believe the Ogres pass through there regularly. Just leave these items on the ground there and we'll hope the Ogres pick them up. Then, we'll figure out how to make direct contact."
No, it's a bad idea.
"Yes. Yes of course, you're right! We shouldn't make direct contact. At least, not at first. We need to sound them out, so to speak. Perhaps if we gave them some sort of offering. A way of letting them know we mean them no harm. That's an excellent idea, friend. We'll need to place the offering somewhere nearby, yet in a location they'll see. Hmm... Perhaps at Spy Rock! Yes! Splendid! What a brilliant idea! I understand that Ogres are fond of bright, shiny objects. Here take these and leave them on the ground at Spy Rock. We'll wait for the Ogres to collect them, then try and make contact with them. Oh, this is so is exciting! Thank you for offering to help me."

Whether you encouraged him, or tried to dissuade him, Jirolin will expect your aid either way. At this point, you could've also asked him more about Spy Rock:

Spy Rock
"It's an abandoned Imperial Watch, in the mountains, southeast of town. Ogres pass through there regularly, from what I understand. It's the perfect place to try and make contact with the Ogres. Don't you think? You'll need to drop off the gems there, so that the Ogres can find them. Come see me when it's done."

Asking him about the Ogres at this point would've resulted in Jirolin saying:

Ogres
"We can't proceed any further until you've been to Spy Rock. Have you placed the offering there?"

At this point, if you speak to Jirolin again, he may also anxiously greet you by saying:

"Have you done it? Have you been to Spy Rock?"

After you placed the offerings for the Ogres at Spy Rock, you could then report back to Jirolin.

Spy Rock
"You did it, eh? Wonderful! Now it's only a matter of time. I think we should give it... a week, and see if the Ogres have accepted our offering. We'll have to keep this to ourselves, of course. Don't want anyone taking the credit for our work. Just come back and see me in a week. Until then, I'll act as if nothing out of the ordinary is happening. If I can contain my excitement..."

Asking him about the Ogres again before the week had passed would make him say:

Ogres
"We need to give them some more time. Don't want to rush things and risk scaring them off."
Spy Rock
"Yes, yes. Once we've given it some time, we can see if the Ogres found the offering we left for them. This is so exciting, isn't it?"

If you met him before the week has passed, he might also greet you by saying either:

"Oh hello there! You'll have to excuse me, but I'm a bit preoccupied at the moment. Thought I saw some sign of Giants, off in the distance."
"I can hardly contain myself. Waiting to see if the Ogres find our offering is so difficult."

However, after the week passes, you would not hear from Doran directly, as he would've disappeared. His wife Ariela would've been distressed, and new rumors by the same Nords/Orcs could now be heard:

"I heard that Jirolin Doran just disappeared. Probably wandered off in search of his 'relatives'. What a kook."
"Ariela Doran's been in such a fright since her husband went missing."

Heading over to Spy Rock, you would find a note left for you, written by Jirolin. In it, he stated that he was following the Ogres over to their "home" in Rock Bottom Caverns. Upon heading there, you would find the Ogres hostile, and Jirolin trapped, clearly a lot less thrilled about his distant relatives than before:

"Oh, thank Akatosh you're here! This is all a disaster! I don't know what I did wrong! They seemed affable enough, they even invited me to their home here. When we arrived, they locked me up here and.... I think they want to eat me! You've got to help me get out of here!"

Trying to speak to him again before freeing him will result in the following warning:

"Please, you've got to help me get out of here! There must be a way to free me and watch out for the Giants, they're exceptionally strong!"

You could also ask about his note:

Spy Rock
"You got the note I left? Good thing I stopped long enough to write it, eh?"

Or about his relatives:

Ogres
"I think I may have misjudged the Ogres' intentions..."

Once you free Jirolin, he'll be quite thankful:

'Thank you so much. I still don't know how I could have judged this situation so horribly, but... Perhaps now is not the time to dwell on it. We've got to get out of this cave! Can you lead the way?"

You would then have to escort Jirolin through the caverns. Upon reaching the exit and going outside, Jirolin would thank you, and although he doesn't have a reward ready for you, he does have a good hint:

"Ah, look at the sky! I feared I would never see it again! We should split up and head back to Chorrol, so as to bring as little attention to ourselves as possible. I'm going to head back now. You should find your way back there too. Although I did see some treasure further down in the cave. I have no way of getting it, but you might. I hope to meet up with you in Chorrol soon, friend. Until then, take care of yourself."

Upon reuniting with him in Chorrol, Jirolin would be glad to see you, and this time, he would be able to reward you for your efforts (although the exact reward he would've offered you is unknown, it's possible they were gemstones):

"You made it! Oh how wonderful! I can't thank you enough for helping me. I'm not sure where I went wrong, but I do know that I'll be keeping my distance from any Ogres from now on. I'm afraid I have little to offer for my thanks, but please, take these. I was able to sneak them into my pockets when the Giants weren't looking."

After the quest, you could still ask Jirolin about his distant relatives, although now he's no longer as enthusiastic:

Ogres
"I've had my fill of Ogres for quite some time, thank you very much."

His Chorrol topic would've also changed:

Chorrol
"I'm so ashamed. Everyone in Chorrol must think I'm an idiot! Let's just keep this thing about the Ogres as our little secret. Please?"

Finally, you could also still ask him about Spy Rock:

Spy Rock
"I assure you, I will be going nowhere near there anytime soon. In fact, it'll probably be a while before I have the courage to leave town."

Notes[edit]

Doran Family Tree
  • In his unused dialogue, Jirolin also refers to the the Ogres as "Giants". He would've been the only character in the game to do so, and it's unknown if this was an earlier name, or an alternative name only used by him.
  • You can find an indistinct piece of parchment framed on the wall in Jirolin's house, which depicts a family tree featuring both a humanoid and an Ogre/Giant. The only legibel line on the parchment reads "Doran Family Tree". Despite it still remaining in the final game, none of Jirolin's original dialogue ever directly refers to the family tree.

Bugs[edit]

  • Jirolin's house key isn't actually tied to the doors in his house, making it useless.
  • As an unintended side-effect of his removed quest, Jirolin's GameMode script constantly runs in the background without purpose.
  • Ariela and Jirolin's bed is unowned, and can be freely slept in.
  • Jirolin is supposed to visit the chapel steps between midday and 4pm, but this package is overridden and he will instead do nothing all day.
  • Besides his chapel steps package, all of Jirolin's AI packages are related to his unfinished quest. This results in 4/5 packages being broken, which in turn also overrides the chapel package, making him effectively do nothing all day.
