Phalevon Vero (also known as Phalevon the Magnificent)[1] was a legendary Nibenese Minotaur-hunter from the Blackwood region of southern Cyrodiil. After Hruum the Red, a minotaur, slew his brother, Phalevon cleared every minotaur lair in the region. He was buried in Undertow Cavern, outside of Leyawiin's western gate.[1][2]

History[edit]

Phalevon Vero was born in the Blackwood region at some point in history and one of his only known relatives was his beloved cousin, Brumium. His cousin confronted the minotaur, Hruum the Red and their battle was witnessed by the people of Glenbridge. Brumium was cleaved in half by the beast. In his grief, Phalevon swore to hunt down and clear out every minotaur lair in the region until he found Hruum's haunt.[2] Throughout that time, Phalevon earned the epithet of "the Magnificent" and wielded many treasures that would become his relics. He used a sword that was so sharp, that some would say it could cut through armor like air. He wore a golden helmet resembling a roaring dragon's face, which was gifted to him by the lord of Leyawiin.[1] He also wore shiny mail armor, and although armor from his era was not well documented, some theorized that the shine of his mail earned him his nickname.[1][3]

But, perhaps his greatest treasure was the Horn of Magnificence; fashioned from the Minotaur Lord, Khaath the Old's horn and engraved with runes. Phalevon had eventually tracked Hruum to a cave on the banks of the Niben River,[2] north of Leyawiin,[1] and sounded his horn, to which he answered. As Hruum charged Phalevon, the hero dodged and the minotaur's attack cracked the cavern wall, causing the river to flood into the cave. Phalevon's counterattack was three slashes across Hruum's flank, but he retaliated by cutting the hero's right arm off. The battle ends with Phalevon striking the minotaur through the heart and Hruum cleaving the hero's helm. And although Phalevon died in battle, he was nonetheless successful in his quest.[2]

The people of Leyawiin honored him by building a Nibenese mausoleum on the site and interred him with his relics. As time went on, his family, House Vero died out, and around about 1E 2802, the mausoleum had fallen into Undertow Cavern in the middle of the night and no one had rebuilt it since.[1] By the mid Second Era, memories of Phalevon Vero were long forgotten and almost all records of his deeds were gone. Only his family remembered his legacy and in 2E 582, his descendant, Amalia Vasatoln traveled to Undertow Cavern to uncover the truth of his story.[1] With the help of an adventurer, Phalevon's relics were recovered and taken by Amalia to Gideon, where she would present them to other scholars. The fate of the horn would remain unknown however.[4]
