Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

This quest starts when you've gained 20 points of Leyawiin reputation. You'll get a letter from the Trans-Niben Trading Company in Leyawiin; go there and talk to Felix Lamarche, who tells you that one of their people made off with 5,000 gold and some important papers. They only want the papers - if you find the gold, it's yours to keep. He suggests you talk to some of the other merchants. They, in turn, will send you to various other people, and you'll end up at the stables, talking to Atahba. She'll tell you that he took his horse and said he was going to the Mouth of the Panther. Head up the road, and you'll find his body just shy of the river. He has neither gold nor papers, and since there are no other clues, you'll have to put the investigation on hold for the moment.

Two days later, the next time you're in Leyawiin, his son Jacques will approach you. He knows who killed his father, and he'll take you to where they're hiding out. Their leader is a man named One-Eye; he's hanging around the Drunken Dragon Inn. Kill him and get the money; keep searching down the road, and you'll find some bodies. Go into Haunted Mine, and you'll find the body of the bandit mage, who's in one of the first rooms; he has the papers on him.

When you leave, you'll be confronted by a messenger who will offer you a deal: Turn over Jacques and the papers in exchange for five thousand more gold. You have three choices here: Refuse outright; sell the papers; or sell the papers and the boy. In the first case, the messenger will attack you; in the second, Jacques will run off and you'll have to catch him; in the third, you'll be free and clear, and five thousand gold richer.

Whatever choice you make, return to Leyawiin and report back to Felix. If you refused the offer, Jacques will join the company as Lebon's assistant, and you'll gain +1 Fame and some good connections. If you sold the papers and Jacques got away, Felix will be furious and kick you out; you'll gain +10 Infamy. If you sold the papers and the boy, Felix will merely be angry (but still kick you out); you'll gain +1 Infamy instead.

Stage Finishes Quest Journal Entry
1
5 I received a letter from the Trans-Niben Trading Company in Leyawiin. They wish to meet with me.
10 A certain Bertrand Lumier, who served as a trusted envoy of Trans-Niben, has run off, stealing more than five thousand septims from the treasury of Trans-Niben. Moreover, he took away important papers which must be retrieved. I can keep the money for myself. To track down Bertrand, Felix Lamarche suggested I start by speaking with Lebon Dombale and Florian Veturius.
15 Bertrand Lumier left Leyawiin on the road leading east from the city, toward the mouth of the Panther River. His nephew Jacques was with him. I will try to catch up with them.
20 Lumier's corpse is lying by the road. He has neither money nor papers. Traces of a short fight, a pool of blood but nothing definite - where to look for the killers of Lumier is unclear. The trail is cold, there is nothing more I can do for now, so I should leave this until something new is revealed.

25 Bertrand Lumier's nephew, a smart lad named Jacques, managed to survive and find me in Leyawiin. He was scared and asked me for help. Jacques can show me where the killers of Lumier have gone, as he followed them. He refuses to just tell me their location, so I will have to take him with me.
30 A large amount of money was found on the body of the bandit leader. This must be my reward money, but there were no papers and I need to find them. Perhaps I should look further along the road for more of One-Eye's gang.
40 Not far from the tavern, the corpse of one of the robbers was found and on it a strange note, about creatures that do not want to release the robbers from a cave. Nearby is the Haunted Mine. Perhaps this their location?
50 There was another corpse in the mine. This time a mage hired by the Imperial Trading Company. It seems he failed to retrieve the papers, he was interrupted by the inhabitants of the mine - ordinary goblins. It is strange that the robbers were so afraid of them. I need to take the papers to Trans-Niben.
55
60 I was met by a messenger from the Imperial Trading Company who offered to buy the papers I found, and to "neutralise" Jacques. A fool to offer me this! I killed the messenger.

70 I was met by a messenger from the Imperial Trading Company who offered to buy the papers I found, and to "neutralise" Jacques. I sold them for five thousand septims, but Jacques ran away as soon as he heard about the deal. I must try and get ahead of him to Leyawiin.
80 I was met by a messenger from the Imperial Trading Company who offered to buy the papers I found, and to "neutralise" Jacques. Jacques was out of luck, I sold them for five thousand septims. I feel sorry for the lad, but five thousand septims! All that is left is to report the failure to Trans-Niben in Leyawiin.
90 The documents were returned to the Trans-Niben company. Now I need to find a place for Jacques to stay. I was advised to speak to Lebon Dombale.
100 Finishes quest☑ The papers were returned to the Trans-Niben company. Jacques will now be Lebon Dombale's assistant, replacing the late Alan. And I, besides money, gained excellent connections among the Leyawiin merchants.
150 Finishes quest☑ Unfortunately, Trans-Niben already knew that the papers were sold to competitors. I was kicked out, and my reputation in the city fell to nothing. Leyawiin has become an inhospitable city.
200 Finishes quest☑ The Trans-Niben company was dissatisfied with the results of my work, they just kicked me out. But almost ten thousand septims warm my pockets.

Notes
  • Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
  • Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in random order.
  • If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
  • On PC It is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering setstage BANLeyawiinTrustQuestioned stage, where stage is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages. See SetStage for more information.
