Site FAQ
09 February 2011
There have been several questions concerning these pages to which I'm commonly
asked. This page is devoted is answering these questions about these web pages
which have plauged mankind since the beginning of time (or at least the past
couple months). If you have any question(s) which you feel should be here, please
make them known to the WebMaster.
- How can I print out some page so that the text shows?
- Whats this printer ( )
icon I see at the bottom of the each page?
- By clicking the printer icon, the current page will be shown as (mostly) black and white to allow
easy printing. Note that some of the main pages are not completely displayed correctly because of the
supporting of non-Style Sheet browsers. Most of the individual pages should be properly displayed.
- You can also print a page without using the printer formatted one supplied. In Netscape chose Page Setup
under the File menu and click on the Black Text option. I would assume that other
web browsers have a similar option but I'm not sure. If your browser doesn't, go into
the options menu and make the browser use only your colours (i.e., force the background
to be white and text to be black). Print the page and reset the color options.
- When I click on a file to download my browser is filled with weird stuff instead...help?!?
- For some reason certain browsers think they can display EXEs and PCX files. In order to force the
file to be saved to disk hold down the SHIFT key while you click on the file. Generally I try
to include such files as ZIPs so this won't happen.
- When I download a file I get errors trying to unzip or run it?
- This is often caused by some download managers that incorrectly download the wrong file (they download the
download page and not the file). Best bet is to disable your download manager until I find a way to fix
the pages to work with download managers (<RANT> you can also e-mail the download manager authors
and tell them to learn how websites work </RANT>).
- There's a missing file/image or a bad link. What do I do?
- While I try and test everything after modifications there's enitivably going to be mistakes or
out-of-date links. Almost every page has a Contact Form link
at the bottom of it. Using this form will tell the WebMaster what page you came from and what
browser you are using (important information which is often omitted when an error is submitted and
makes correcting the error much easier and quicker). Don't ignore obvious error and think 'Someone
else will probably e-mail'. I'd rather get 100 e-mails rather than none.
- So who creates these amazing/awesome/incredible pages anyways?
- Everything in the UESP is maintained by the webmaster, Dave Humphrey, me. This is simply an
enjoyable hobby (most of the time anyways) and I don't get anything for it except a handful
of messages a day from people wanting to know how to become a werewolf (or the like). I don't
use any fancy HTML editting tools, just a good ole' text editor and a good understanding of
how WWW works (I'm one of those 'DOS will never die' type persons). As you can guess it is
quite a time consuming job keeping everything up-to-date but I still try to update frequently.
On the other hand, you should note that a lot of the information contained in the pages is not
written by myself, but included from hundreds of contributers.
- How old is the site?
- The original UESP was created around the summer of 1995 (hosted on www.newforce.ca/~jackel). It started out as the
Daggerfall FAQ (text file distributed on USENET newsgroups) and was turned into a web FAQ once the first browser came
out (Mosiac v1.0)! Not too many websites out there today have lasted that long. The Daggerfall FAQ soon became too
large for itself and turned into a general page devoted to all the Elder Scrolls games (though at the time, just Arena
had been released). After a year or two on newforce I switched to a donated site at honesty.com until I was offered a
spot at m0use a year or two later. Unfortunately, m0use died a second death at the end of 2002 and I switched to the uesp.net site
at the start of 2003 (domain and site paid for by myself).
- I want to contribute some information or help in some way.
- I'm always glad to accept new information and will add it when I have time (as long as it's quality info
and unique). If you would like to help maintain the site feel free to volunteer as I'm sure I can find
something for just about anyone too do. You can either use the Contact Form
or E-mail Me.
- The search utility confuses me...help!?!
- See the Search Info Page for more information on using the
search utility to find things in these pages.
- Can I be contacted whenever the site is updated?
- The site mailing list has been discontinued.
- What with this 'Customize Site' page?
- This option has been removed.
- Do you have any goals in mind about site and its future?
- When the site was new in the mid-late 90's there were very few Elder Scrolls sites so
I had just about everything ESE related I could fine on the site. More recently, however, there is a
good community of ES sites so I'm not as burdened by the need to have 'everything' as others sites
can fill in where the UESP lacks. Because of this, I've tried to concentrate mainly on content
(faqs, hints, walkthroughs, etc...). I've seen many great sites disappear over the years and while
things like news and forums can be missed, content will always be needed (proven by how popular old
games like Arena and Daggerfall still are).
Some general concepts I try to stick to are listed below (in no particular order).
- The primary purpose of the site is to offer content (walkthroughs, tips, cheats, basic files, etc...).
- The overall design should remain simple (this isn't a technology demo of the latest tech fad).
- The design should keep a low minimum system requirement (i.e., not require a high screen resolution, not require
JAVA, not require a specific browser or OS, etc...).
- Content from submitters or message boards will be properly referenced to the original author (unless
asked not to be cited). E-mail addresses will not be listed unless requested (due to spam concerns).
- Content from other ES websites will not be used/copied until permission is received from the website owner.
Any website will be cited as a reference.
