Low quality and Blurry[edit]

Hello Holomay, Though neither I nor my peers agree with you re your comments about the image http://en.uesp.net/wiki/File:ON-quest-Vanus_Unleashed.jpg, especially when compared with screen captures in general, and feel you may well have mistaken dark / sombre / caliginous for low quality / blurry. I also assume that you do realise that this was not intended to be a close up but a wide angle view of the boiler to provide a bit more atmosphere and context. That said if there is some way of taking a vote on this by a statistically significant number of the UESP community I will abide by the result and the image can be removed. Otherwise, thank-you for your critique I will keep it in mind for future efforts. GameFace42 (talk) 22:07, 11 September 2017 (UTC)

There is no vote that can take place, but if it was shown that this image was of the best possible quality and that it could not be improved upon, a consensus could remove the request for a new image. However, I agree that the image appears to be of low quality, "especially when compared with screen captures in general", as many ESO screen captures can be mistaken for screenshots released by the developers given their high quality. The blurriness around the lights in the image, the magic effects and the object to the top right, is a giveaway sign that the settings for your game and/or display are not at their best value. This is in no way meant to stop you taking screenshots, something is always better than nothing, and it could very well be that this image will never be improved upon, even if the request sits for years, as it has elsewhere. If there can be no vote there can be no consensus, either way (which I feel is an issue with all sites of this ilk). In addition to my previous comment. I am aware of opinions that also disagree with the argument put forward. However, that's the thing with opinions, they are just opinions and sometimes non-qualitative. I am curious how one should define "image quality" with respect to these images let alone in general, let alone to pieces of art, which I deem these things to be. This image may not stand amongst my favourite works but I doubt that it is currently possible to get a better screen capture of this particular vista. That said, next time I'm in the area I will try, if only to satisfy my own curiosity.GameFace42 (talk) 02:20, 12 September 2017 (UTC)
The CleanImage template does not mark a screenshot as bad or unworthy, and any new upload can be discussed and, if necessary, reverted. With the lack of "freeze" commands and reloadable saves in ESO, it's often difficult to get good images of particular scenes, and, as Silencer said, it can take a lot of time before anyone will even try to create a better screenshot. So it's good to have this image in the quest article. Many images, and interior images in particular, need to be brightened for the wiki, but they still have to represent what can be perceived in-game, and there's a really fine line between these two necessities. I'm not sure how much the uploaded screenshot differs from the original, but I guess that contrast has been lost in the processing - there are hardly any really dark tones left although it's a really dark interior. If you browse categories like Online-Interior Images or Online-Quest Images, you'll find a lot of dark interior images with more details and higher contrast. BTW there's also File:ON-place-The_Black_Forge-Foundry.jpg with 1200x513 pixels. What's your actual in-game resolution? --Holomay (talk) 11:37, 13 September 2017 (UTC)
If consensus is what we're looking for here, then let me add my own two cents: this image is oversaturated and doesn't meet our quality standards. As Silencer says it's certainly better than nothing, but it does need to be marked for eventual replacement. —Legoless (talk) 20:18, 13 September 2017 (UTC)
